PATRICK’S STORY

Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire

« Patrick lives normally like all his friends, with one secret: he has been carrying HIV since birth. »

« It has been two years now since my father passed away. It was not until his death that he was found to have the AIDS virus. That’s how I learned that it was probably him who gave it to me when I was born. Unless it’s God, no one can tell.

My mother then confessed to me that she was also positive so that I would not feel alone in this ordeal. She is the only one in the family who knows about my condition.

I have never told anyone about my illness. Not even my best friend, because I don’t know what’s in his heart. I would like to tell him, share this heavy secret, but I’m afraid of his reaction and that he will run away from me.

I prefer to keep my illness a secret, because when people hear such news, they end up running away from you. As long as I don’t hurt anyone, I don’t hurt.

One day I will become a gendarme. I’ve always wanted to do this since I was little. It will bring me respect from others, and no one will neglect me. »
