ZEÏNA’s STORY

Bamako,  Mali

« I write to denounce things in society. I write about suffering, violence against women, excision. It’s a sad reality here »

Zeïna, 20, writes on the banks of the Niger River, a place where she comes to find inspiration.

Zeïna is a student at the Bamako conservatory in the multimedia section. She writes and slams, on the daily life of women in Mali, on her personal daily too. She would like to continue her studies in film directing, but the course does not yet exist in Bamako.

« The cinema like poetry or slam, allow you to say things that generally you cannot express because of the parents, like for example the love, the stupidities… for that, the Malian or African society is very different from the ‘West: There are some things you can’t discuss with your parents.

Today I write to denounce things in society. I write about suffering, violence against women, excision. It is a sad reality here. It was long considered that women were made just to take care of the family, but not to integrate into social life. »
