maminata’s story
Sikasso, Mali
« Maminata, 13, is waiting for a nurse at the health center in Fama village. »
Maminata is seven months pregnant. This is her penultimate appointment before returning to the health center to give birth.
“One day my grandmother found out that I was no longer on my period, and told me I was pregnant. I was surprised. When I had sex I didn’t know I could get pregnant, someone else told me about it. I have never been to school.
I accept the pregnancy but if I had to do it again I wouldn’t do it now. We only had sex once and I got pregnant. We knew each other from before but we didn’t have an intimate relationship.
The father proposed to me and I accepted, that will allow me to be supported. I am happy to get married, it was not forced. I didn’t want to be pregnant, but I’m going to love my baby. “
