Researchers work 09 September 2004 in a laboratory in the Madagascan capital Antananarivo. The Pasteur Institute of Madagascar started hosting 11 September 2004 a week of talks and practical training for fellow scientists from nine other African countries hit by the plague. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been about 20,000 cases of the disease in Africa since 1980, 95 percent of bubonic plague and five percent of pneumonic and septicaemic plague. The African continent concentrates three-quarter of the cases of plague in the world,  but apart from Madagascar, African countries are not organized at all regarding monitoring the epidemic.
